Desk analysis
On the night of October 11, attackers hijacked Danfoss refrigeration controllers at hundreds of European supermarkets and used the controllers' built-in defrost function to push fridge and freezer temperatures to 50C. French outlets count 250 to 350 affected stores, BFM TV reports more than 300, and the damage lands hardest in France: Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour Market, Monoprix, Leclerc, Auchan, and Super U all confirmed or were named as victims. Food retailers in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Spain were also hit. Losses run to millions of euros in spoiled stock; a Gradignan store manager described staff finding a cold room at 50C at 4am with sprinklers triggered. Coopérative U president Dominique Schelcher called the attack on food-supply equipment unprecedented, EU agriculture commissioner Christophe Hansen condemned it, and the Paris prosecutor's office is involved.
The technical root is unpatched operational technology. Danfoss confirmed the attackers exploited a known vulnerability, and reporting notes the same flaw was used against US DoD commissary refrigeration in August. Most affected stores had simply never patched or updated their controllers, and ITPro reports many run controller versions that no longer receive security updates at all. One outlet, cyberworldops.eu, links the flaw to CVE-2025-41450, though that attribution is the weakest link in the reporting chain.
This is the clearest recent case of criminal capability against physical food-supply infrastructure without ransomware involvement: no encryption, no extortion note, just cold-chain destruction at scale. Watch for the Paris prosecutor's attribution, whether Danfoss names the specific CVE and issues forced updates, and whether regulators treat retail refrigeration fleets as critical infrastructure requiring patch SLAs. The August DoD commissary precedent suggests the technique is being passed between groups, not used once.

Cyberattack shuts down refrigerators at French supermarkets
bleepingcomputer.com · 1d ago · October 12th, 2026
Attackers remotely defrosted refrigerators at multiple French supermarket chains overnight in a cyberattack that reportedly targeted Danfoss refrigeration controllers. Victims include Intermarché, Coopérative U, Carrefour Market, Monoprix, Leclerc, and Super U, with French outlets reporting that the attack affected between 250 and 350 stores, causing significant financial losses and food waste. The threat actors hijacked refrigeration controllers running older versions of Danfoss control software on Sunday night and used them to raise supermarket refrigerator temperatures by triggering a built-in automatic defrosting system. Coopérative U president Dominique Schelcher confirmed the incident earlier today and said that the attack affected multiple stores in the chain. "I can confirm that, since last night, a cyberattack has been affecting the refrigeration systems in several stores within our @CooperativeU network. Our teams are fully mobilized, working alongside refrigeration specialists, to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. An investigation will be conducted to shed full light on this attack," Schelcher said . "Targeting equipment essential for preserving fresh produce and supplying food to the French people is an extremely serious matter and is unprecedented. It is unacceptable." EU agriculture and food commissioner Christophe Hansen also condemned the attack and named France's largest supermarket chain, Leclerc, as one of the victims. The Paris prosecutor's off

Hackers heat up supermarket fridges, spoiling food across France
malware.news · 16h ago · October 13th, 2026
Some installations reportedly reached temperatures of around 50°C (122°F), with damaged equipment and reports of fires adding to the disruption. These stores do not share a single parent company, but they all use refrigeration-control equipment supplied by Danish manufacturer Danfoss. These commercial refrigeration-management systems let operators manage the equipment that keeps supermarket food refrigerated or frozen. Le Monde reported that the attackers extended defrost cycles from one hour to eight hours, delaying alarms and giving staff less opportunity to intervene before stock was ruined. Danfoss told AFP that most affected equipment consisted of legacy products that no longer receive software or security updates. It identified AK-SM800 and AK-SC355 systems among those affected and said it had long advised customers to move away from obsolete models and keep supported equipment updated. The damage goes beyond spoiled food. The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigatio

When a cyberattack breaks the cold chain
malware.news · 13h ago · October 13th, 2026
For years, people have associated cyberattacks with stolen data, locked computers and disrupted digital services. However, the incident that affected numerous French supermarkets during the night of 11–12 October 2026 shows that a breach can have consequences beyond the digital world. This time, the attackers did not primarily target tills, payment systems or customer databases. According to published reports, the cybercriminals gained remote access to controllers manufactured by Danfoss and altered their operation. In some stores, prolonged defrosting cycles were reportedly activated and temperature settings were modified , reaching as high as 50°C in certain cases. The resulting break in the cold chain forced the affected supermarkets to remove large quantities of fresh and frozen products . Some stores had to temporarily close sales areas or suspend part of their operations while they inspected the equipment and disposed of the affected goods. The total financial impact is not yet known, but initial assessments suggest losses running into millions of euros. This incident is particularly signifi
