Desk analysis

Iranian-Turkish national Amir Barati, 40, was extradited from Montenegro to the US on an FBI warrant tied to the Mabna Institute. The indictment links him to state-backed hacking since 2013, targeting 144 US universities, 178 foreign universities, 42 private US companies, five government agencies, and NGOs. The attackers stole over 31 terabytes of scientific resources and employee email accounts, handing data to the Iranian government and selling it to Iranian universities. The campaign caused losses exceeding $3.4 billion. Montenegrin authorities arrested him on June 25; US authorities unsealed a 14-count superseding indictment charging 17 Mabna members. The suspect performed intrusions on behalf of both Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and private organizations. The extradition is a rare legal win for law enforcement against state-linked actors.

Watch for confirmation of trial scheduling, additional extraditions of the remaining 16 indicted Mabna members, and any disclosure of victim notification timelines. The scale of university and intellectual-property theft makes this a long-tail threat to academic research security.
