FFmpeg PixelSmash (CVE-2026-8461) — MagicYUV Heap Overflow Enables RCE in Jellyfin, Nextcloud, Kodi
bleepingcomputer.com · 113d ago · June 23rd, 2026
JFrog disclosed a heap out-of-bounds write in FFmpeg's MagicYUV decoder — dubbed PixelSmash — that enables remote code execution on Jellyfin media servers and denial-of-service conditions in Kodi, Emby, Nextcloud, PhotoPrism, and OBS Studio. The vulnerability (CVSS 8.8, CVE-2026-8461) stems from an inconsistency between how the frame allocator and decoder compute chroma plane heights in slice handling.
JFrog demonstrated full RCE against Jellyfin 10.11.9 via the media library's automated ffprobe scan pipeline: a crafted MagicYUV AVI file downloaded into the library triggers
ffprobemetadata extraction → OOB write fires →AVBuffer.freeis hijacked tosystem()→ attacker's command executes as thejellyfinservice user. The exploit requires ASLR bypass via chaining with an FFmpeg FlashSV info-leak bug. An alternative attack vector via torrent download requires zero user interaction.FFmpeg version 8.1.2 (released June 17) patches the flaw. Jellyfin has updated its bundled FFmpeg. The MagicYUV decoder's presence in hundreds of dependent projects creates a broad supply-chain attack surface — Slack, Discord, Telegram, and WhatsApp use FFmpeg for server-side video processing (not confirmed vulnerable but within scope).
Hunting hypothesis: Monitor for unexpected ffprobe/ffmpeg child processes on Jellyfin hosts, or anomalous network connections from the
jellyfinservice user shortly after media library scans. -

FFmpeg PixelSmash (CVE-2026-8461, CVSS 8.8) — Heap Out-of-Bounds Write Enables RCE via Crafted Media Files
securityweek.com · 112d ago · June 24th, 2026
The attack surface is immense: any application using FFmpeg for media processing — desktop video players, file manager thumbnail generators (GNOME, KDE, XFCE via ffmpegthumbnailer), self-hosted media servers (Jellyfin, Emby, Plex), cloud transcoding pipelines, NAS appliances, and smart TVs. On Nextcloud, the flaw can be triggered as a near-zero-click attack via the Movie preview provider — the attacker only needs the file visible in a folder listing. JFrog achieved code execution by targeting FFmpeg's
AVBufferstruct — placing a NUL-terminated shell command at a specific out-of-bounds offset. FFmpeg version 8.1.2 contains the fix. Recommended action: Update FFmpeg to 8.1.2 on all platforms. For media server operators: disable automatic thumbnail generation until patching is complete.
