Desk analysis
The FBI arrested a third suspect in connection with the ShinyHunters breach of FBI systems that exposed data on agents and job applicants. The group had previously defaced the FBI jobs site and claimed possession of very sensitive data on almost all FBI agents and applicants. 404 Media initially broke the story, followed by NYT and TechCrunch reports.
The arrest is part of a broader disruption of the ShinyHunters network. Backfill events reference the group's open feud with rival ransomware operations and its spectacle-seeking posture before targeting the FBI. The breach included sample data containing names, addresses, phone numbers, and spouse details.
This is verified law-enforcement and media reporting with multiple independent sources (NYT, 404 Media, TechCrunch, SecurityAffairs). No CVEs apply; the incident is a data breach and criminal investigation rather than a software vulnerability.

bleepingcomputer.com · 24d ago · September 19th, 2026
Three days before the FBI breach, ShinyHunters defaced the Clop ransomware operation's data leak site on Tor and claimed it stole server data and the private keys for the site's onion service, threatening to extort the rival gang. The incident shows the group was already in an open feud and a spectacle-seeking posture in the days before it targeted the FBI.

A sample of 5,000 alleged agents reviewed by 404 Media included names, addresses, phone numbers, and details on employees' spouses.

ShinyHunters claims attack on FBI exposes almost all agents
cyberscoop.com · 21d ago · September 22nd, 2026
The FBI is investigating an attack on its own systems after ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the incident, putting the prolific cybercrime group in the most direct conflict yet with agents responsible for investigating data extortion attacks. “The FBI is aware of claims regarding unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating,” a spokesperson for the agency said in a statement. An alert on the FBI jobs site notes that apply.fbijobs.gov and the Special Agent Application Portal are currently unavailable. The attack marks a sobering escalation by ShinyHunters, a notorious group that previously targeted major cloud platforms, healthcare organizations, universities , technology companies, retailers and education service providers. Previous victims of ShinyHunters this year include Instructure , Salesforce , Snowflake and McKesson . “The ShinyHunters ransomware group appears to be actively trying to put a target on their back,” Cynthia Kaiser, senior vice president at Halcyon’s ransomware research center, told CyberScoop. ShinyHunters claims it targeted the FBI in response to a public service announcement it says contains false allegations about the group.
