Apple sends new ‘Threat Notification’ alerts over mercenary spyware attacks
bleepingcomputer.com · 61d ago · August 14th, 2026
You're not alone if you just received an "Apple Threat Notification" saying it detected a "mercenary spyware attack targeted at your iPhone." Some users on Reddit are reporting that they received these alerts today after Apple sent out a new batch of threat notifications on August 13, but the feature itself is not new. Apple sent a new batch of alerts to users on August 13 Source: Reddit Apple has been sending these threat notifications multiple times a year since 2021 when it detects highly targeted mercenary spyware attacks. It's also worth pointing out that Apple does not identify the spyware behind individual alerts, so there's no evidence that today's notifications are specifically related to Pegasus. However, Apple itself cites NSO Group's Pegasus as an example of mercenary spyware historically associated with this type of attack, and forensic investigations into previous Apple threat notifications have confirmed Pegasus infections in some cases. In a support document , Apple previously confirmed it sends threat notifications to users in more than 150 countries after detecting highly targeted mercenary spyware attacks against specific iPhone users. The list of potential targets includes journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats, who have historically been among those targeted by this type of spyware. Apple has issued a new wave of high-confidence Threat Notifications to selected iPhone users in 110 countries, warning that their devices may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. The notifications signal suspected activity associated with exceptionally capable, well-funded surveillance operations, not routine phishing, commodity malware, or broad criminal campaigns. Apple says threat notifications are intended for people believed to be targeted because of “who they are or what they do.” Apple Sends Spyware Attack Alerts The company characterizes mercenary spyware operations as vastly more complex than typical cybercrime: attackers dedicate exceptional resources to a very small pool of victims, exploits can be expensive and short-lived, and the activity evolves quickly to evade detection. Public research has historically linked such attacks to state actors and private surveillance vendors. Pegasus, developed by NSO Group , is one prominent example cited by Apple, although the company does not attribute individual notifications to a particular spyware family, customer, government, or country. Likely targets include journalists, activists, politicians, diplomats, lawyers, and civil-society figures. An alert does not by itself prove that an iPhone has been successfully compromised; it

Apple now uses iPhone alerts for targets of mercenary spyware
malware.news · 60d ago · August 14th, 2026
Apple now shows a warning directly on an iPhone’s Lock Screen and in Settings when it believes the device owner has been targeted by mercenary spyware. The new on-device alert is meant to make a high-risk warning harder to overlook and complements notifications by email and through the user’s Apple Account page. Apple says it has notified targets in over 150 countries since the launch of the program in 2021, while the latest round of notifications reached people in 110 countries.
