Descriptions

KEV: WSO2 API Control Plane, API Manager, Traffic Manager & Universal Gateway contain a path traversal vulnerability that could allow for unrestricted file upload and lead to remote code execution.

NVD: The JWT authentication mechanism accepts tokens signed with algorithms other than those explicitly configured or supported. This allows an attacker to craft a JWT with an unsupported algorithm, which is then incorrectly validated, leading to unauthorized access. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in unauthorized access to the system, including the potential compromise of administrative accounts and full account takeover. The CVSS score is adjusted to 9.8 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) in single-tenant deployments, reflecting that the impact is contained within a single security authority boundary.

Hunting hypothesis agent

Hunt access logs for Bearer JWTs to WSO2 API Manager paths like /api/v1/me whose header decodes to alg=none with an empty signature dot; WAF or custom log capture is required because stock access logs omit the Authorization header.

Exploit notesCVSS attack complexity: LOW | CRITICAL severity (CVSS >= 9.0). Public PoC (fankh/vulnerability-poc) is detection/verification tooling — sends alg=none and empty-signature Bearer JWTs to common API paths and ships a Docker vulnerable/patched demo lab — not weaponized WSO2 exploit code. watchTowr observed in-the-wild exploitation, with honeypot-captured forged-admin JWTs on 2026-09-13 (The Hacker News).
SummaryWSO2 API Manager, API Control Plane, Traffic Manager and Universal Gateway accept JWTs signed with algorithms outside the configured set in the carbon-apimgt JWT validation path, letting unauthenticated attackers forge administrator tokens for full account takeover (CWE-347, CVSS 10.0). Vendor advisory WSO2-2026-5328 (2026-05-03) provides public fix PRs for community users and update levels for subscription holders across API Manager 4.1.0-4.6.0. watchTowr reported in-the-wild exploitation attempts with forged-admin JWTs on 2026-09-13, and CISA added the CVE to KEV on 2026-09-24 with a 2026-09-27 due date.
