Descriptions

KEV: Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller & Manager contain an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass authentication and obtain administrative privileges on an affected system.

NVD: May 2026: This security advisory provides the details and fix information for a vulnerability that was discovered and fixed after the was disclosed in February 2026. This new advisory is for a new vulnerability in the control connection handshaking. The section of this advisory includes Show Control Connections guidance to help with system checks.  A vulnerability in the peering authentication in Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller, formerly SD-WAN vSmart, and Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager, formerly SD-WAN vManage, could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass authentication and obtain administrative privileges on an affected system. This vulnerability exists because the peering authentication mechanism in an affected system is not working properly. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted requests to the affected system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to log in to an affected Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller as an internal, high-privileged, non-root user account. Using this account, the attacker could access NETCONF, which would then allow the attacker to manipulate network configuration for the SD-WAN fabric.

Hunting hypothesis agent

Hunt vdaemon logs for CHALLENGE_ACK messages claiming device_type=2 (vHub) on UDP/12346, and alert on SSH key writes to vmanage-admin authorized_keys or new TCP/830 NETCONF sessions — CVE-2026-20182 Cisco SD-WAN auth bypass.

Research details

Componentvdaemon DTLS service (UDP/12346) — vbond_proc_challenge_ack() function with missing vHub (device_type=2) authentication verification
PreconditionsNetwork reachability to vdaemon DTLS service on UDP port 12346 of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller (vSmart) or Manager (vManage); No authentication or user interaction required; Target must run a vulnerable version of Catalyst SD-WAN Controller/Manager; Attacker can use any self-signed certificate; No prior knowledge of the SD-WAN deployment needed agent
DeliveryCrafted DTLS handshake over UDP/12346 to vdaemon service with CHALLENGE_ACK message claiming device_type=2 (vHub) to bypass peering authentication

Exploit notesCVSS attack complexity: LOW | CRITICAL severity (CVSS 10.0) | Metasploit module available (cisco_sdwan_vhub_auth_bypass) | Actively exploited by UAT-8616 | CISA Emergency Directive 26-03 issued
SummaryCVE-2026-20182 is a critical (CVSS 10.0) authentication bypass vulnerability in the vdaemon DTLS service of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Controller (vSmart) and Manager (vManage). The vbond_proc_challenge_ack() function fails to validate peers claiming to be vHub (device_type=2), allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to establish a forged control-plane peer connection, inject SSH keys into the vmanage-admin account, and access NETCONF to manipulate the SD-WAN fabric. Active exploitation by threat actor UAT-8616 has been confirmed in the wild, with multiple public PoC exploits and a Metasploit module available.
